ESD safe storage in ABS plastic?

I love to 3D print. I want to print storage for electronic ESD sensitive parts. So here I am, looking for ideas.

There is ESD safe ABS filament available, but at $95/kg I think I’d look for another option.

I spent some time at TI where I was responsible for selecting and characterizing their ESD control devices. One of great concern was the plastic tubes that hold DIP packages. It turns out that the tubes are insulators with no inherent dissipating or conducting properties. They were given the ability to dissipate static by applying a chemical coating to the tubes. During manufacturing ICs were slid in and out of those tubes several times. One of my jobs was to measure how many times the tubes could be reused before the coating was “rubbed off” and no longer effective. The coating was just a base that absorbs moisture from the air and subject to wearing off.

I think you could do something similar with 3D printed ABS. You should be able to find similar coating chemicals. There are also more expensive permanent coatings that are applied like a paint.
