Embroidery Machine

Back in February a man I believe named Chirs taught a class on the Embroidery machine. If you are still a member could you contact me please.

Mike

It was a woman named Chris and I have tagged her @John_Marlow which is probably why you couldn’t find her.

Sk8nmike - Nick Sainz and I taught the class. PM me.

Chris

I am also interested in a class on it.

Out of curiosity, would this machine be able to make four or five patches (like a flight suit patch)?

The machine is capable if it is programmed correctly. The maximum image size is 4" (wide) x 6" (tall) in the portrait orientation but I wouldn’t recommend a patch that size. Something that large with a lot of solid fill will take a very long time to stitch. You are more likely to be successful if you use premade patch blanks. The machine uses PES files. No, there is no automatic convertor that will take your image and make it into a PES file.

If you go to the Tools Wiki and click on the Babylock link, it will take you to a page where you can see detailed notes on how to use it, including how to transfer your programmed image onto the machine. Page 14 of those notes contain two links to a tutorial and a video with information for making patches and the tutorial page also sells premade patch blanks.

That is a great intro document you’ve put together. What sort of payment is reasonable for use? I have no idea how to measure it, much less know how much it should cost.

Edit: assuming I am using the DMS-provided bobbin/embroidery thread and needles.

You can use the DMS-provided bobbin thread and stabilizer and needles for free. If you break a needle you should contribute $1. I think the embroidery thread is 50 cents per 1000 stitches - it’s posted on the thread storage box, and the money goes in the WHITE box on the wall in the Creative Arts room (i.e., NOT the wide format printer box).

A digitized pattern should likely tell you how many stitches it has. Of course it varies greatly between designs, but as a gross rule of thumb, one square inch of “solid fill” stitching will have about 900 - 1000 stitches in it. Something with a lot of empty space (or an irregular shape, for instance) could have a lot fewer stitches.

If I am doing a project with a lot of one or two colors, I typically go to Joann’s and buy a spool of that color and use the DMS-provided thread for the small bits for which I’m not motivated to buy an entire spool. I find that more economical; but it’s up to you and you’re welcome to do whichever method works for you.

Unless someone has finished up a spool, these were the thread colors we had last time I checked. We have white and black bobbin thread and white cut-away stabilizer. The stabilizer is in a large roll … I had cut off a bunch of pieces for use but if they are all used up you will have to cut your own off of the roll.

OK, I have a dumb question so I will ask it; it would be dumber to not ask and repeat what someone else had already done.

Is there a file to embroider the DMS logo onto a shop apron?
