DMS White Elephant/Yankee Swap (December 10th 7PM)

I will be organizing a White Elephant/ Yankee Swap. Our next membership meeting is December 10th and I hope to do it starting at 7pm and be done in time for the actual membership meeting at 8pm…unless a lot of people participate.

Really all you need to do is bring a wrapped gift that costs between $10 - $15. (that cost could be retail or the price in materials.)

For anyone not familiar with this, the rules are simple. Throw the gifts all in a pile and assign people that brought gifts a number. We will then go through the numbers and people will select gifts. On your turn you will have the option to steal a gift from someone else or to pick a gift from the pile. If you are stolen from you have the option to steal a gift or select from the pile. If 2 gifts are stolen in a row the third person has to select from the pile. This goes on till all the gifts are selected.

Is alcohol allowed? In the past when I have done these at work, booze is always the most popular thing.

Yes alcohol is allowed. That being said, someone under 21 is not allowed to steal alcohol and if they happen to select it from the pile, they will have to pick a different gift from the pile.

A nice twist is to allow the first person the last choice

These are always a hoot. Many organizations have them: corporations, churches and other community organizations do these for fun. The fun is in “stealing” other people’s gifts since that is what gets the most laughter. Also, I’ve been when the “white elephant” truly was a present of something NOBODY wanted such as an old ugly straw hat.

Lastly, I agree with @hasbridge that alcohol is always a popular gift. I’m amazed at my company’s white elephant how many bottles of booze appear. Even the gift cards are not as popular as the alcohol.

Hopefully, some people will use things that they have made in the exchange. It should be fun. Thanks for putting it on @AlexRhodes!

I will likely bring more than one and it will be handmade. That helps if someone comes at the last minute.

If we bring any things that are more for children, I would suggest that one use some child wrapping paper. I will try to pick up some stickers that folks can add to those also

@AlexRhodes for president of the universe! Great idea should be lots of fun!

Just want to post a reminder that this is tonight! Also, just realized it was never on the Calendar (just added it) so now I am wondering how many people will be showing up. Hope all can come.

I thought it was on Sat and I was planning on it then, sorry

I am sad to have missed this.

Can we do this again on Sat night?

Thanks for hosting this Alex!

It was a great time !

Is there any interest in one for Sat night, for the folks that missed it tonight?

Ask in the FB event to see if you can drum up some interest

I hated missing last night, but I’m already committed on Saturday for something else. I really want to make one of the events so that I can meet more makers.
