Been a DMS member for 6 yrs. Just discovered Hatchers Armory this very hour. Better late than never.
Old enough to have particpated in gun club DCM shoots with Garands and trapdoor 45/70s.
Interests include reloading, bench and longer range rifle.
Any suggestions for range with longer than 100 yd backstops?

Magnum Sport center outside of Sanger is 200 yard. Can’t speak for other ranges. They are not a big time range, it’s like a family who owns the range. I haven’t been in years, so I can’t attest to what it’s like now. It’s outside, pay at the office, then drive down to the rifle range not too far from the office.
Hatchers at DMS is, of course, non-functional. No firearms or reloading at DMS currently. No carrying at DMS either. Very limited gun oriented activities.

Yeah, I talked a friend into joining DMS solely based on Hatchers. We both did some reloading there and had a great discussion group. We build out Hatchers in part with some wood I donated and it was a very cool thing to be a part of.
I was sorry to see it go. I learned a lot there.
We still have the folks, but the Carrollton Fire Marshall was having conniption fits about the various activities that Hatcher was promoting/doing.

Has this formally changed? Last I saw, open carry was discouraged, along the lines of don’t make us make a rule. But I was not aware of any other restrictions.

Same. I’ve not seen 30.05/30.06/30.07 signage nor do the rules prohibit mere peaceable carry.

One more agreement on the that there is no formal ban on handgun carry at the space. While not doing it regularly, I have open carried at least 3 times in the past year at the space.

Can you please cite this. The last I recall was a stated preference for concealed carry from when I was on the board. As far as I know this hasn’t changed since.

I cannot. I just remember a bunch of talk about it and I thought the conclusion was that no one should bring a gun to DMS.
There was a lot of concern when I invited some black powder folks to come to DMS to show how old black powder guns could be remade into a peace pipe tomahawk. I finally got BOD permission to have them teach the class in the blacksmithing shop. No black powder or other gun ammo was included and no parts were made, only instruction using existing parts brought in by the instructor.
As far as I’m concerned, you can conceal carry as long as you obey the law.
There is a student in my blacksmithing class, a retired police officer, who carries one to every class.
This is exactly what I remember. The only reason I open carried was at the time I did not have an IWB holster available.
Zombifying this thread due to being told that people, potentially tour guides, have been stating guns are not allowed at DMS. This is not correct.
Among other things, if DMS was going to not allow any guns the required 30.05, 30.06, and 30.07 signs would be required to be posted " in a conspicuous location" in DMS.
As related in the messages above, the current policies are guns are allowed but with a preference of concealed carry. Open carry is allowed but discouraged.
I would request that the tour guides be advised of this policy to make sure they are not passing on incorrect information.

However, for clarification, work on firearms is prohibited, in accordance with our rules. Perhaps this is what people actually mean …

Agreed, no argument here. I suspect this might be where the confusion creeps in, the no working on firearms is mistakenly expanded into no firearms period.
Again, I would just request the tour guides be advised/informed of the distinction between the two, and any necessary corrections be made in the information being delivered to tour members.

I’m not as current on this as I used to be, but AFAIK ever since licensed concealed carry was enacted, entities not explicitly open to the public - i.e. nonretail places of business, private clubs, government offices - could prohibit the possession of firearms by policy without placing the old familiar 30.06 notice and it could carry the force of criminal trespass law. I’m not sure if this has changed, but in the last ~decade I’ve noticed many a private facility not at all open for randos to wander into has opted to post 30.06, 30.07, 30.05, other signage indicating that possession of firearms is explicitly prohibited.
As a tour guide, I typically mention that work on firearms and their parts is not allowed during the machine shop/blacksmithing parts of the tour. I can see how that could be taken to mean possession is also not allowed even though that isn’t the intent.
I’ll modify the wording to something like “while possesion of firearms is not prohibited, work on firearms and firearm parts is generally prohibited at the space. Please consult the rules on source for more informationm”
We do occasionally get people who have working on firearms parts or reloading as their primary motivation for wanting to join. So the reason I mention it is I don’t want people to sign up and then find out later that they can’t (in the spirit of full disclosure). Or end up inadvertently in violation because the vast majority of people probably don’t read the rules.
Obviously if I am instructed by the board or someone else in charge of tours to stop mentioning the rule, I’ll be happy to do so. But otherwise, I still think it’s a good idea to bring it up.
