Master Your Craft: Strategies for Making, Designing, and Selling Artisan Work
By Tien Chiu

I followed her online writing and adventures for years. A very interesting multi-talented fearless person. I admire her philosophy and approach to things. If you dig long enough she has an old blog called Traveling Tiger that chronicles her several month long adventures traveling alone in Southeast Asia.

She’s a textile artist among other things, but the common thread with everything she does is a sense of fearless exploration and diving deep into an interest, taking things to another level. Her book has a lot of her in it, plus it includes 22 other artisans of many mediums and their approaches and philosophies. I like the focus on the creative process and personal voice.

I believe everyone should have a copy of this book. First to read and second to give away as an answer to the question “What do makers do (and the unspoken why should I care)?”

Creating is not extraordinary, even if its results sometimes are. Creation is human. It is all of us. It is everybody.

I read this book twice. The 2nd time was out loud to my teenage son. Thought it was that important. Written by the person who coined The Internet of Things.

This excerpt is why I read it to my kid: http://www.howtoflyahorse.com/before-i-begin/
