Discussion: Remembering Burt (Britton aka SWA on Talk)

I am heartbroken. Burt became a mentor and friend, and I took many of his classes, especially on cabinet making. He was always generous with help and advice, and he also had a great sense of humor. I remember when I built my first cabinets, before I took any classes, and he came up to me and asked what I was doing. He said I had broken every rule, but that it still worked. After that I took his classes, and I learned how to properly build a cabinet, doors, and drawers. Thanks to Burt I dared to build a whole kitchen from scratch.
I will miss Burt very much. I think the idea of the signs is brilliant, it is a fitting memorial of a great and kind man.

Here is a picture of Burt from his 9/1/2024 Cabinet making class. His loss is not only a loss to Dallas Makerspace but Dallas loses a really good craftsman.

Just learning of Burt’s passing in this email. Not sure how I missed this before.

Would gratefully contribute and am heartbroken as Burt was one of the people to welcome me to the DMS and I looked for him often when I was there.

Do we have his memorial or service information?

Just seeing this post about Burt’s passing as well. I can’t believe he’s gone, I just saw him last weekend. Burt and I would have long conversations about the current state of the art and AI while my wife was working on her cabinet in Burt’s class. I always thought of Burt as the Oracle in the Matrix. He was this unassuming guy and I always knew where to find him in the woodshop. I don’t know how to explain it but I would always leave every conversation with my brain spinning from his sage opinions. I will miss him very dearly. My wife will miss him too, she never did get to finish the cabinet class.

Wow, it just won’t be the same without Burt there. He was so welcoming and willing to help newcomers feel like they could take on any project. I took several of his classes and worked on a couple of small projects with him and thoroughly enjoyed his company. Such sad news.

I know that it’s way too late to say this, but Burt, thank you for everything that you have done to DMS and for all the times you have given me advice. I always appreciated them, even if I don’t look it. You had a way of making everyone feel capable, even when we doubted ourselves. Burt, may you rest in peace.

I’m so sad to hear this! I haven’t been in the shop for a while and just came across this. Burt was a true friend and mentor both in the woodshop and outside. He was selfless in his dissemenation of knlowedge and was always willing to help. Often times the woodshop comes with attitude of you have to make mistakes to learn. Not Burt, he had decades of cabinet making and capentry knoledge he was willing to offer up with a smile! He knew everyone and was always aware of what everyone was working on. “Hey - let me introduce you to so and so - they did something similar a couple years back”. He was a people person always willing to strike up a conversation on any topic and talk! He really was the oracle of the Dallas Makersapce and he left the Makerspace much better then he found it. A true leader. An example for us all at the makerspace. Rest is peace my friend.

I looked for an obituary or memorial serice - I couldn’t find anything. I’d love to donate to the Burt Memorial Woodshop fund.

I’m going to bump this until this is done.

I do not have a final autopsy report yet, nor do I know if Burt had any real next of kin. I was able to find his parents but I don’t know if they’re alive. I do know that he never mentioned them or to the best of my knowledge, never went to Midland to visit anyone.

Gear up for the First Annual Britton Burt Memorial Taco Dinner.

Don’t need to donate anything other than participation, help and a kind heart.

Thank you! That is the best picture of Britton I’ve ever seen/had.

He looks like a ten year old who just got caught doing something his mom didn’t approve of. PERFECT picture of him and exactly how I’d love to remember him!

No. Trying to find out if he has any kin still alive. I found his parents’ names (sort of - I found where the ME or police can get them).

Wouldn’t want to have a service without inviting them or his siblings or other relatives if they’re alive. That would be special. Someone in his family needs to hear how cool he really was.

A post was split to a new topic: Let’s not do this

There will be a gathering at the space. Stay tuned.

Devastated to be seeing this just now. Having taken multiple classes from Burt, he was a great, patient teacher whose sole interest seemed to be the success of DMS. His passing is a huge loss—for the space and personally. Rest in peace, Burt.
