I would like to have access to the computer lab so as to teach a class. I need to find out if there are any limitations or actions that I need to take or do I just reserve the room?
However, this is my real question… I gave two classes on programming and running stepper motors and servos. The classes were difficult because of tech issues and some people had Macs and some had issues with simply commands. I need to install the Arduino IDE on the lab computers.
Who can I have a chat with to go into more detail about my class. In spite of the tech difficulties I have had very positive feedback and I am looking for a way to remove all possible glitches so I can provide a class that provides a good experience.
I’ve taught an Arduino class as well, it was a PITA due to each student having different laptops.
No great answer for you… the infra team, with help from others, have volunteered to make the computer lab available.
It works very well, imo… particularly for seeing the teachers screen in addition to your own.
But… That said, nobody is responsible or required to have SW installed and available. Systems work as in, and I suggest you engage with the infra team (in person) if you need more help.
That’s my non-authoritative perspective,
Cheers!!
Jack
Hey thanks for the interest in helping.
Please install Arduino IDE 2.3.8 from arduino.cc/en/software with all default settings. After it is installed, open the IDE and do these two things. First, go to File then Preferences. In the box labeled Additional Boards Manager URLs paste this exactly: raw.githubusercontent.com/espressif/arduino-esp32/gh-pages/package_esp32_index.json and click OK. Then go to Tools then Board then Boards Manager and search for esp32 and install the one by Espressif Systems. This may take a few minutes. Second, go to Sketch then Include Library then Manage Libraries and search for ESP32Servo and install it. That is everything. Nothing else is needed.
I have a board already wired up for the Arduino, ESP 32 DEV, LEDs , momentary switches, stepper motor , servo, potentiometer and a ultra sonic sensor. The class is demonstrating how to use Claude to create programs to operate these items.
The student will create the program and use the IDE to upload to the boards.
Probably best way to do this is set a date to get together and install / test on all 7 pcs in the lab rm. Make sure everything works the way you need it to so there’s no class time wasted on surprises.
Why aren’t we using specialty containers instead bloating the workstations with more apps? This way the teacher can keep things updated, instead of pushing more work on the volunteers,
Good Morning I would gladly do what ever I need to do so as not to load up volunteers. But what do you mean about specialty containers? Can I set those up or how can I get access to set it up myself? In any case I will be at DMS if any one want a face to face.
I’ll be at DMS around 3p. Have several things to take care. @davdstanton if you’re around, meet me in the computer lab around 4p and we can get the process started. Looking at the event cal, the lab isn’t reserved for anything today, Sat, Sun, and Mon. Should be plenty of time to get things installed and running. Bring one of your hrdwr kits to run tests.
Thank you , I will be there. btw… I called it the computer lab but you really mean the digital media room ? Just want to make sure we are on the same page. I will see you at 4:00 and I will bring one of my kits to test with . Thank you
Computer lab in the Creative Arts area.
Also something to keep in mind is that non members will not be able to log in on DMS pcs. Don’t think there’s a work around for this.
And to clarify, the digital media computers are not to have other software installed on them beyond digital media I believe.
The computer lab, which as art said is off the creative arts area, is much more open to having software/random stuff installed. It is also set up with monitor screens for each station that mirror the teachers and stuff.
And that is correct- you need to be an active member in order to log into the computers.
Thanks for your help installing the IDE yesterday. I came in today with a board to check that everything was working good. But when I attempted to run the ESP32 … I need to install the Silicon Labs CP210x USB-to-UART driver so my computer can communicate with ESP32 microcontroller boards through the USB port. Without this driver, Windows doesn’t recognize the device. It’s a standard hardware driver from Silicon Labs — not a program or application.
However, I need to have admin access to install those drivers. Can you advise how I can proceed.
Yes I have already contacted everyone who signed up. Thanks for the attention to detail. However, I just now went to the computer lab for another check. Just to make sure all is working as it should. I do not want to assume or take any chances. I found that all workstations are in fact working correctly. BUT the admin computer is off line. I can not get a internet connection at all. I rebooted the computer and still it will not connect.
Only idea I have for now is make sure the network is securely plugged in on BOTH ends. Might try unplugging / plugging the connectors - again on booth ends.
