What do ya’ll recommend for coating a blade before finishing it?
Are you looking for general use knives? Most of the time its a coat of boiled linseed oil.

It matters on the use of the knife. Boiled linseed oil is some amazing stuff, but much of it is not considered food safe due to the processing and chemical additives that can make it toxic to humans. I’m a fan of food grade mineral oil for knives that I think will come in contact with food. Vegetable oil and Olive Oil are alternative options as well.
Right now, self defense knives.

Boiled linseed oil would be great for this!
Just don’t leave cotton rags with boiled linseed oil on them rolled up without them being dry first.
