Call for Hackathon Helpers

The Computer Committee is putting on a Hackathon in March. In order to take advantage of all the tools and knowledge we have at the space, we’re looking for volunteers to help teams be available to help teams build their solutions to the challenge.

As a Hackathon Helper, you will coordinate times to meet with teams at the space using the slack workspace (I will reply to this once it’s up and ready). Teams will be able to work on their solutions in advance of the hackathon, which takes place March 21st & 22nd, so even if you’re not able to help on that weekend, we can use your help beforehand.

More details about the number of teams and team sizes will be announced soon, but the number of teams will not exceed 30 and the team sizes will not exceed 5.

Thought we were using discord? does there need to be yet another chat system?

Do you need question the decision to use Slack?

Just trying to keep on the same page here.

What day of the week will it be on?

The Hackathon itself will be Saturday, March 21st at 12pm - Sunday, March 22nd at 2:30pm. The idea is that we will start letting teams sign up some time in February and they can start on their projects way ahead of time and just wrap up their projects and submission videos during the Hackathon.

I’m thinking Hackathon Helpers during the main event and/or in the weeks leading up to it. There are no time commitment requirements as a Hackathon Helper, you can coordinate with teams as needed and as you’re available.

I will volunteer. I’m not sure how I can help, but I have over 25 years professional IT experience, my skills are primarily data related.

That’s my work week. Sorry! Wish I could

how I can help

There is a trello board: Trello and discussions are held at Discord

Overall we’re needing committed volunteers to help doing the event’s setup and to get the word out so we have participants. But do feel free to pick something off the trello board that your interested in.

@ihistand The Trello board is for helping organize the event. The Discord is open for anyone to discuss anything with the committee. Here’s the Slack I created for the event where participants can join, where organizers can make announcements, provide encouragement and guidance, etc.

Here’s the Slack:
dmshackathon.slack.com
You should be able to auto-join. Let me know if you have any problems.

Edit: use this invite link: Slack

If people use a single Discord channel for the hackathon, it will be unorganized and hard to sift through. Please use the Slack workspace, which supports multiple channels among other useful features.

Teams will consist of 1-3 people. There will be at most 20 teams.

Please use the Slack workspace

Sounds like you already have one setup. What’s the link so volunteers can join?

It’s in an earlier message in this thread. It’s dmshackathon.slack.com

Edit: use this invite link: Slack

I’m missing something. I attempted to use the email address associated with my DMS account, and my DMS password, no luck.

I also tried the link: If you have an @dallasmakerspace.org email address, you can create an account. That didn’t work either, which isn’t a surprise as I don’t have access to email at @dallasmajerspace.org ( or maybe I do?) Let me know

Try going here and logging in with your normal DMS username and password: http://mail.dallasmakerspace.org

I think I just fixed it. You should be able to join without the need of an @dallasmakerspace.org email address.

I just figured out that you have to be invited, so please use this invite link: Slack
