Blowing a 5000A fuse

This guy was very determined!

Those are some hella capacitor banks he’s built…

@Raymond probably has a few of these in his shop but if you need one, here is a source!

That’s so funny… This video showed up in my recommended YouTube feed yesterday!

too fast for railguns except for the largest of them.

OK - I’ll byte…
Too fast as in how to fast?
Thought low ESL/ESR was part of the design criteria.
Guess one could stick some Ls and Rs in the discharge path to “slow” things down
Got a link to some info out there on railgun design? Physics, math, etc.

Low ESR/ESL can be fine if you lengthen the pulse. You need to deliver power over the entire length of the rails.

Most hobby scale railguns still use electrolytics.

http://powerlabs.org/railgun2.htm is a great writeup on hobby scale railguns…

His 3.0 supposedly will use faster caps like the ones in this video, but I’m unsure what he’s doing for pulse shaping. He stopped posting updates on that unit after 2012. At that energy you have to build it a little tougher. I’ve seen inductors explode from users trying to slow the pulse load off caps that big on smaller guns.
