Audio/Video recording equipment at the space?

I have a presentation I am giving in the lecture hall, that I would like to audio and video record.

Aside from the old XL1 cameras kicking around, are there any video cameras available? I haven’t seen anything, and can rent one if not. Pointers on where and what to rent? I don’t need pro quality. I’ve rented photo gear from Competitive Camera before, but I’ve never rented any video.

Any suggestions on handling the audio portion?

If you will look up at the projector, you may have noticed a camera and a laptop computer on the shelf below.

Unfortunately, the person who set that up is on involuntary sabbatical. Ask Jay @JayJohnson600 whether anyone here knows how to work it.

Isn’t that one of the old XL1 cameras?

You can record audio with the equipment in the small locker unit second from the top. Mics and Tascam, and there’s a quick instruction sheet in the locker also. The Classroom committee also has a wireless lapel mic that you can connect to the Tascam.

The Open cast class recording equipment is there on the wall in the main lecture hall, but it’s not “active” to capture the speaker with zoom/pan/tilt. It will capture the whole front wall area in a fixed view.

The Sony RX10 camera we have will shutdown after 23minutes, so that will present challenges.

I’ll be at the space various times this weekend, and we can discuss your needs further.

I think that the primary issues with the XL1 cameras that we have is that:

  1. We don’t have a functional power supply. There was one created in the electronics lab, but it was literally in a plastic shoe box and only partially functional.

  2. They are Standard Def (720x480 DV) tape based cameras, that will be a bit of a pain to digitize for any editing (do our towers even have firewire ports?).

I have a big old pile of DV tapes that I can bring as a donation if anyone wants them, which solves another issue of media.

I’m going to try to be at the Space on Saturday to assist in the Metal Shop and can give you a quick lesson on operation of the camera (if we can get a PS for it) if it works out. For a talking head presentation, I’d say whatever is the absolute cheapest to rent!

Thanks, I should be around at some point this weekend too.

As for the XL1s, while I may have desperately wanted one in the pre-hd era, not so much anymore.

I don’t think I need 4k for this, but I definitely want more than 480!

An iPhone5 (or newer) or decent android (Galaxy, etc) will take excellent video when used with a tripod for stability. Shure and a few other big names make some excellent mics/interfaces specifically for working with phones.
