Article: rough year for MakerBot, new layoffs

Looks like they have a lot of work to do and soul searching.

I think this shows that MakerBot needs to transition from being a toy and a curiosity to being a reliable tool. It makes me wonder how much of what we print on our 3D printers is actually “making” and how much is play.

Bre Pettis is a jerk-ass, too bad those after him are going down with the ship and not him!

Many years ago, I bought my son a Cupcake CNC for us to assemble over spring break. We took our time and built it as precisely as well could (for wood) and it printed the calibration cube perfectly the first time! We made the whistle and a couple of other small items. Then the power FETs started popping. Within one week after we built it they stopped supporting the Cupcake. The best solution they would offer was to mail us 3 FETs in a non anti-static bag. Of course 2 of the 3 were zapped. All I wanted was a new control board. This is when you would often get Bre on the phone and he refused to replace a $9 board.

Since then Bre Petis can rot in a dumpster.

They got a lot of bad PR as a result of a dick move on their part:

Yep,
No tears being shed. We have all watched as a group which was built on the hard work of a community, turn against it’s own community. Greed, mistakes, and bad partners will lead to failure. It sucks that so many will and have been hurt.

Good luck to those looking for new work.

Funny that Bre got canned after getting rid of his former partners. That’s what happens when you sell out.

I’d say a pretty high percentage is making. I make a few robotics parts every now and then on our printers and it’s very simple with almost no jacking around with the machines. As far as I can tell the printers run almost nonstop making useful things for people.
