A transmission bolt broke off while being removed. Part of the thread/shaft is still in the hole so I can’t put anything else in. I didn’t notice until going to put pan back on, i.e. after removing pan and draining fluid.
So I am pretty much dead in the water…any ideas?
I think we have bolt extractors in the tool drawers. Alternatively, if you can find a small enough cold chisel you might be able to tap it a few times to get a grip and extract.
I could think of a few.
- Talk to it sweetly, please come out.
- Yell at it until it decides to give up & fall out
- Tell it, you will buy it dinner
- try a left handed drill bit
- may need to remove the pan to use a cold chisel or vise grip as Jay stated
- remove pan & weld a nut to the broken thread, allow to cool & remove.

Thanks…do you know in which tool drawer in which committee area I should start looking?
Do we have any left handed bits in the building…I don’t tink I’ve ever seen any?
How did you/ did you resolve this?
I don’t use bolt extractors or EZ outs - as I have had to unfuck too many situations those things cause by people using them.
Still thinking on it…but truck is not leaking/seeping any fluid with just the ~20 (i.e. full complement minus 1) bolts in place, so I seem to have some time to consider the best course of action.
