I have project that requires extensive acrylic welding, not versed in this area at all. Need some guidance on this, willing to meet up at space for a tutorial, dinner, beer, whatever you prefer included. Thanks in advance.
I wish I had the knowledge to help, because I could really use a beer after work today. But, I would suggest that you reach out to Allied Plastic as they have been willing to explain manufacturing processes to me in the past and I believe that also sell the chemical weld. Just a suggestion, if no one else can help.
PS
Can’t wait to see what new project your working on.
Hey, Rodney - was asleep at the wheel. Sometimes don’t get over to this board to much - a bit way too much of, “Oh, yeah? Well your mother wears army boots!” for my taste. I’m going to be at the space on Sat. morning to teach Lathe Basics, for sure.
When you say welding, are you talking about this?
“Acrylic is typically glued using solvent-based glues, such as Weld-On 4.
Unlike many other gluing processes, acrylic glue softens the surfaces
of the acrylic and welds them together, chemically bonding the two
pieces into one.”
Just did a class on this last month - found I was way out of practice, but will be happy to walk through a project with you. I have done a ton of it my day but am not too proud to say, “Uh, you better seek a professional.” Can you give me a rough idea of what you want to do? Let me know and I’ll check with this space at least once a day.
A LED photobooth similar to this. Yes, thats the type of acrylic welding i’m referring too.
I have all of the guts, just need help with the shell. I need to take @Tapper 's advanced cnc class, so I can cut the acrylic.
Holy cow - that is big! Are the sides one piece or do the sections stack? here is a link to a builder that is doing some pretty large stuff - Building an Acrylic Aquarium - Part 3 | Cichlid Fish Forum
We have a quart of the thin solvent and I’m looking to get my hands on another bunch of “scrap” 1/4" plex, so should be enough to practice with. Weld-on makes a bunch of different solvents, so I’ll do a little research.
Hey Jeff you available this weekend?
Rodney, I’m going to be down there tomorrow until around 2 - teach a lathe
basics class from 10 - 12.
what time you think you’ll be able to speak with us
Crap - apparently you have to send 20 char or more and all I typed yesterday in reply was “12:30”. Hopefully we can get together then.
