Age Restrictions

I’ve seen a post here before, but can’t find it now. Where is the age requirement for each area? My 16 y/o is interested in making some custom t-shirts & laser engravers, and my 12 y/o would like to use the 3d printers.

Cheers

I have a vague recollection of a unified document to this effect but cannot find it on Source.

Those items at those ages would be covered by committee rules and would be included in Source under each committee. If u need additional clarification, please reach out to the committee chair

The 16 year has some flexibility. At 12, the child must be escorted by a parent and many of the tools will be off limits

But look at committee rules.

It looks like your 16YO can take the training for the lasers, but it appears that all the others you will have to reach out to the committee chairs to ask.

Laser rules:

Regarding the T-shirts … what process do you envision using? Embroidery, dye-sub, and heat transfer vinyl would fall under Creative Arts. Silk screening would be under Printmaking.

Also, according to the DMS rules regarding minors, your 12 YO must be closely accompanied by a parent or legal guardian; i.e., you. Unfortunately your 16-YO is not considered a legal guardian for supervising your 12yo.

From the Woodshop Rules:

Minors (under 18 years old) Rule. Minors are not allowed to use any tools in the Woodshop with the exception of the Festool sanders and dust collectors. Minors may use the Festool sanders and dust collectors if they are used outside the Woodshop and under the supervision of a parent or guardian who has taken the Woodshop S&O class.
Minors are not allowed in the Woodshop unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must have taken the Woodshop S&O class and is responsible for their minor and their behavior/actions.

Though someone over 16 or 18 is needed to actually make it, nothing prevents a minor from designing a shirt or something to be engraved or 3D printed. That is the hardest part of the job for many of us.

The 12 YO wouldn’t be coming without me.

AFA the 16 YO she was part of the inaugural Science Olympiad team at her high school. They ended up making it all the way to the state competition. Seeing that most of the other schools had ‘team shirts’ she wants to make shirts for this year. She was interested in the Silk Screening process, but we haven’t been watching the Events calendar, and missed the training last weekend.

She could also make team shirts with the heat transfer vinyl, it’s a lot easier process. I’d be happy to help her with how to do that sometime.
