For anyone interested in having a maker space in their school, I just completed a grant project based around designing an affordable maker space. We spent around $8,000 for the year, and using an entrepreneurship challenge we were able to earn back enough money to make the space self-sustaining. If you are interested in reading more about it, I have a website:
That is really neat! I am attending Purdue University and work as a peer mentor at the Bechtel Innovation Design Center. It is a machine shop like makerspace for students to turn their projects into reality just as DMS does. Of course, the Bechtel Center currently secures funding from school funding as well as company donations instead of member fees, but I would check it out if you are interested at all. https://www.purdue.edu/bidc/
