I’ve seen an effect on a few picture frames:
I’m not sure I want to go that complicated, but the lighter color on the lines looks neat. How would one achieve this? Is it a stain/paint trick? Or something with the grain?

Multiple methods are possible:
Paint or stain with a darker tone, then lightly sand off the paint/stdin to reveal the light color wood.
Paint/stain as desired, thn drybrush the lines to the desired color.
Paint/stain the desired lighter color, then seal with varnish, shellac, etc. Use a darker wash on top to get the other colors.
