Absolute Beginner welding resources

Are there good resources out there for someone who is interested in welding but has -1 experience with it? And yes, that was a negative one. Less than zero. I’d come to a class, but I feel like even the beginner stuff would be over my head. I know what the results or welding are, and I know that there are different kinds of welds (tig, mig, etc), but could not tell you what is best for any application nor how to do any of them.

@bd_simpson :: Don’t be intimidated due to lack of knowledge or experience. People in Metal Shop are very patient and willing to answer any questions, from the most basic to the most esoteric.

There’s no substitute for just jumping in and getting some training and experience. No one expects you to be perfect the first time. Few, if any, are.

Keep safety for yourself, others, and the tools in mind, and you’ll enjoy the experience. Then practice, practice, practice. Hot metal’s fun!

The two websites with the <<<<<<<<<<< are my favorites. If you understand the concepts of controlling the weld puddle and heat management (weldingtipsandtricks.com) you will have conquered the most challenging mental part of welding. Its manual skills and practice burning wire after that.

The best way to learn is to do. I’m not sure what caused a negative one experience. However, welding is an art and skill learned incrementally. The journey has to start with the first step.

With that said, what is your goal of learning welding? Do you have a particular project you’d like to work on? Do you want to learn for the sake of learning? Which process most interests you? Etc…

Thanks for the links and the tips. I’ll check them out and will plan on coming to one of the committee meetings or asking around.

@delpn, I didn’t mean to say that I have had a negative experience. I meant that my experience level was negative-one.

Yes I know this is over a year old, I figured it was worth sharing in this thread.
