5000 microfarad capacitors

Does anyone happen to know where I/we can find some large capacitors?
The spec I’m looking for is 5000 microfarad 450v. Here is a picture of the cap. We need about 8.

Does it have to be 450VDC? I can’t seem to find any that high voltage range, but they do have some 400VDC options on mouser.

Ebay had an old listing for that exact cap, but it was sold long ago. Hopefully this is like fuses where they use items that have a large voltage range and you don’t need the full 450VDC.

This part has a slightly lower surge voltage and a slightly sloppier high-side capacitance tolerance.

This doesn’t tell the whole story about a capacitor though (ripple rating and ESR can be critically important), so be careful.

This is the same cap but in a slightly lower, more standard value. You might have better luck with it? (again, be careful when making part substitutions)

Try one of these.:

Since the date code on the cap is 9714, I doubt seriously that the circuit you are servicing will be demanding on ESR or ripple ratings. Twenty years ago, you almost never saw an ESR rating.
Notice the tolerance is -10/+50, another artifact of a twenty year old blast from the past.
You might be ale to get by with 10% lower value (ie 4500uF) because stuff made today doesn’t have that sloppy a tolerance range.

You should be fine with a part that has high enough voltage rating and correct capacitance value.

I would check with a camera store that handles repairs. You might be able to get some photoflash units that have been called abandoned repairs or not economical to repair for cheap.

First time I looked at this thread … not an electronics guy. I’ve got some old flash unit (Novatron) with Big A capacitors in them, for some reason 450V sticks out and they are 5 of 6 Farad. Is so, would these work? If they will I’ll try to find them. Have about 6 of them.

They are about the diameter of a soda can only only a little taller I think.

CDE makes them but their web site shows no stock in any distributor.

Here’s a sales contact from their web site: (http://www.cde.com/sales-rep-search?country=United+States&state=Texas)

You want part #: 3186GH502T450APA1

Here’s the data sheet on the 3186 series:

Mouser lists them as a special order:

CDE says Arrow has 100 of these in stock as of 7/14: 550C502T450FF2D

But Arrow says it doesn’t…

They do say that CDE has 5 in stock…

We ended finding some from an old machine someone had that they took out of Rochester. We did try to get new ones from the manufacturer, they had them on their shelf in Florida. They however were an OEM part, even though we are the OEM, they wouldn’t sell it to us. They would only would sell to our parts center, which our parts center said was 4 weeks out.
