3D-Texture UV Printer for DMS?

Does DMS need/want one of these? It looks impressive at first glance and would add a unique capability to our 3D fab lab.

Kickstarter for what appears to be an amazing 3D printer at the $2K-ish price point, depending up which bundle is selected.

Prints on wood, glass, metal, canvas. Has rotary attachment. Has camera that allows placement of print image on camera view of print target. Looks to be appealing for artistic types (see youtube link below).

It lays down ink from cartridges then immediately UV-cures the layer. Can create pseudo-oil ‘paintings’.

Downside is ink cartridge cost. Cartridges are chipped and non-refillable. Printhead replacement cost is $600, although there’s a $300 annual eufyMake Care Service that allows for a printhead replacement.

Found this on ink costs from geeky-gadgets review.

Its proprietary ink system is a significant long-term expense, with a full set of cartridges costing around $300 and no third-party alternatives available.

This demo video (from ks link) was very impressive and gives a good overview of the features and examples in operation.

Challenge for DMS is how to meter ink usage for charging members. Hopefully there’s an API for getting usage that could be used for computing member print cost.

Props to @Paul_Bouchier of DPRG for inclusion of this printer in DPRG meeting summary email, which was the genesis for this thread.

One thing that gets brought up is that specific company has a repeated history of rapidly abandoning their hardware support after a newer version is released for both parts and consumables.

Additionally, from my personal research into the UV printers it’s common for them to be very smelly, and require daily use/maintenance. It’d be nice to have, but I’m not sure DMS is a good environment for continuous proper functioning like we would like.

Are you thinking about UV resin printers?

This printer lays down the prints using ink jet technology, then cures the ink with UV illumination. If you watch the linked youtube video the reviewer states that this printer’s odors are much less than a UV-cured resin print.

In general, DMS has been opposed to backing Kickstarter campaigns. There is no guarantee that a working product will be received, and spending members’ money on wishes and prayers is a bad look.

Agree that members’ money shouldn’t be used to gamble on a product delivery.

I’ll watch this project and report back if/when they start shipping real product.

Hey Paul, thanks but you probably meant this to go to the list. It came just to me, but the thread is interesting and relevant to the group. Take a look at your send options, there should be one to send to the list. If you could send it that would be great, so I’m not the only one who sends to the list. :face_with_spiral_eyes:
