Thank you, Stan, for bringing this to my attention. I’ve contacted the Laser user who owns this car and asked that he respond to this thread.
Laser and Automotive are good neighbors and I am pleased to work with @TLAR. In fact, I want to give a shout out to Joe and John, who I met last night. Wish I knew their Talk handles. Joe did an excellent job cleaning the Laser worktable after using it for parts work.
Automotive has only 3 bays. We at Laser know a thing or two about waiting to use a resource.
Stan @StanSimmons ,
Thank you for helping us try to be awesome to each other. You truly give so much more to the space than we can ever repay. It’s meager, but thank you.
Thanks,
Thomas
Well… two real bays. The area between the lift and the door can be used (carefully, and after asking the person on the lift) for quick projects, as a car in that location blocks both the others from exiting.
Understood. A limited resource. Queue etiquette. Things which we’re very familiar with in Laser. Therefore, I expect our Laser members to use their manners when using Automotive for unloading. Goodwill all around.
Actually there are only two. Often people can fit in behind them - but they must do work that allows them to lull if other cars need to get out. Usually not a problem.
The real problem with folks that do this - can cause those that look at the west door camera on the wiki to see if the bays are vacant BEFORE making the drive do the Space.
Camping out while using a laser or the woodshop (like the bmw) the other week, gives a false sense of no room for auto work and is not being excellent.
I propose a max of 15 minutes rain or shine or any other weather for unloading or loading.
I also propose zero / detailing & washing of cars inside the bays of the Space. That is not what Automotive is for.
Probably hairsplitting here, but I can imagine that detailing has happened before … washing would take some creativity and industriousness given the lack of water and drainage in the warehouse.
Detailing in the non-lift bay is a lot easier and better than doing it outside - there are power outlets nearby for running machine polishers and buffers, and the lighting makes it easy to see what you’re doing. It’s also a lot more tolerable buffing and waxing in the climate controlled shop versus outside in the heat/cold/rain. Please reconsider before banning it outright.
Just the point I was about to make! And – while I’m sure Auto has some peak times when everyone wants to get something done, I’ve walked by many times when the bays are empty. A little creative timing, and one could detail their vehicle without inconveniencing any one.
I’ve replaced a pair of sheared control arms on a bagged truck in a mall parking garage in the dead of winter. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. But as much as I like a clean car, I just don’t think the auto square is the most appropriate place to do detailing.
