The Babylock Embroidery machine can embroider a design up to 5" x 7", and we have a hoop for that size (two, actually). But bigger isn’t necessarily better. If we had a 4"x4" hoop, would anyone use it?
Why, you might ask, would someone use a 4"x4" hoop when we already have a bigger one? Here are some reasons:
Using the smallest hoop that will circumscribe your design will give you the best tension control (i.e, least slack) when you hoop up your project.
It saves on stabilizer. The stabilizer must cover your (large) hoop, regardless of your design size. If you are embroidering something small (for example, a shirt chest pocket-sized logo, or a monogram), a 4"x4" hoop is adequate. Using the 5"x7" hoop requires a 10" x 12" piece of stabilizer - which seems like a waste to me.
If you are embroidering a small item or garment, like baby items, it’s hard to get a large hoop in there.
FWIW, and I intentionally didn’t mention this before … we already have a thick package of pre-cut stabilizer that would work with this new hoop. It’s cut too small to use with the 5x7 hoop.
