Working on non-memebers car

I know to use the lift, Rule 2 applies:
Only operator’s personally owned vehicle may be placed on lift

Can a friend and I (I’m a member, he’s not) work on his truck in the area next to the lift?

Thanks,
Tom

Complete auto rules are on the auto wiki page

We don’t prohibit that explicitly, but its important to note that non members are not allowed to use DMS tools (except as part of a class), and anyone entering building must have signed the liability waiver in the front lobby.

Thanks for the quick reply Brandon. Reading the rules, it appeared that it wasn’t prohibited, as long as I don’t use the lift. Thanks for the info on the tools. I’m interested in following the rules, but also the spirit of the rules. It looks like it’s OK if we work on his truck, using my own tools and jacks. He will sign the waiver in the front lobby. I’ll be present, and also working on the vehicle at all times. No money is changing hands - this is strictly a friend helping a friend, and looking for a dry space to work. As I said, I’m more interested in abiding by the intention of the rules.

Thanks again,
Tom

You should encourage your friend to join! If you’re doing anything more than changing oil then the labor is probably more than a month of membership. Just my two cents.

I am pretty regularly promoting DMS to my friends. So often and enthusiastically that I bet they suspect I’ve joined a cult. Hey…now that I mention it, maybe…lol.

I agree with you on the financial advantage for the first month, but he doesn’t work on his vehicle a lot, so the other months don’t fit that model. Since we don’t offer it, I figure there’s a good reason we don’t offer temporary membership (1 month for example). I definitely will walk him around DMS, and continue to recommend he join.

People can sign up for one month and then quit. There are no rules against doing that. Though it’s generally frowned upon because people that have done that in the past often have left messes and other problems behind. If someone wants to join for a month and then quit and not generally wreak mayhem I think everyone is cool with that.
