Woodturning SIG: Top challange

Greetings my woodturning peeps. At the end of the last SIG meeting we said TOPS would be the subject for people to work on. If you need a little inspiration here are some quick videos you can watch: Making Tops.
Make on and bring it to the next meetup. Remember - the one that spins the longest wins (hmmm, maybe we need a prize. that can be arranged) cheers!

Do they have to be wood?

Now that, is a good question  I’m thinking some good old speedy Pb.

I was actually thinking brass …

That’s too boring… You want to win this or what?

You can in fact turn brass on a wood lathe using scrapers. It’s slow and difficult but I’ve done it a few times

So have I. That’s why I asked.

When I teach, I make the point of distinguishing between turning metal vs. metal turning techniques. Same thing for turning wood and woodturning techniques. Up to certain sizes either technique could be used for either material. In miniature you can pretty much choose either approach.

Isn’t it a ‘Wood’ turning SIG?

We allow all races and creeds- metal, plastic, vegetable ivory, wood and more. Just spin it baby

Okay, Tungsten it is.

Uh huh. That ought to play hell with your wood turning tools. Oh wait they’re DMSs? Carry on.

does it have to be small enough to be spun by only one person?

I like how you think.

Just a little woodturning SIG group @ DMS preview…

Most of us will never see tungsten machined. I know I never have. It was interesting to read about it. Thanks for prompting me to do that.

I’d say no. the largest one I’ve seen in person was 6 foot tall. I don’t recall it being spun.
