Woodshop Reopening Saturday 11/14 at 6am

The Felder dust collector is once again inoperable.

All tools dependent on the Felder for operation are out of use at this time.

Tools that remain in use:

  • Spindle Sander or drum sander with use of floor vaccum
  • Palm / hand sanders
  • Lathes
  • Drill Press
  • Excalibur
  • Multicam with the use of a floor vacuum carefully following the head

Tools that are down:

  • Everything else

The issue will be updated in this thread in following posts.

Mods please pin.

Felder would not turn on after a clean out around 9:30 tonight 11/10. It sounded like one contactor was connecting but not multiple.

Upon opening the access panel, magic smoke was found coming out of what is assumed to be a contactor.

Machine was unplugged and locked out. LOTO Key remains onsite in woodshop lockbox.

I will call Felder in the morning.

No reopening estimate at this time.

Unfortunately I know that smell all to well.

Yes that is the contactor with overload built in.

Not one you can ever forget once you’ve smelt it.

From Rich’s notes this looks like this is the same leg that was over drawing current last time we had an issue.

Did we at least finally wire the Felder into the fire panel after the last wiring fires?

Nope. We’ve discussed it, but not actually done it. :expressionless:

Already tried to get the Felder connected to the Fire Panel. DMS needs approval from the Landlord to connect the Felder to the building’s Fire Alarm system, they own that system. The Felder is capable of being connected, just need the authorization. It is the responsibility of the BoD to get that authorization if they want it done.

Thank you for three info. I am teaching wood shop class tonight. Will check again later today. Does cancelling a class send notifications to the people signed up? I don’t want them driving to DMS and finding out.

No, you’ll have to reach out to them. Under the calendar page from your side you generally will get their email and phone numbers. In the past I found that emails generally go to spam so its best to text and let them know. Additionally, you might want to post a piece of paper about the cancellation in a conspicuous place in the class area, and make it its Talk own post and tag the students. Might be overkill but I’ve not had anyone complain about saving themselves a drive.

Thanks. I’ll text them to let them know now that we might have to cancel depending on the status of the repair

@Youssefb I would consider the chance at the felder being up and running tonight to be very low.

Do we think there is a possibility it is back up tomorrow or by the weekend?

Update for today:

Felder tech called me back at 4:30p today and we discussed the damage I saw. He has replacements in stock for the damaged parts but feels there may be something else wrong given the repeat over-draw on the first leg.

We are working with the service tech over the phone to identify any other issues, once that’s sorted they will come out and fix all identified issues.

No projected opening at the time.

As per last time we closed the shop due to felder issues, I’m going to open the Multicam to use as long as users carefully follow the head with a floor vacuum. This was an oversight on my part last night, sorry.

Can we get updates as soon as they happen? Thanks

Any updates or timelines on the process ?

All-

As I know more I am updating you here. No need to message me and ask for more details. If I knew something I could share, it would be posted.

Felder is shipping the needed parts out for overnight delivery. Felder does not have a tech who can be out to the space in a reasonable time frame so I’ve worked with two members who are more than capable of performing the repair and they will be meeting the parts and repairing the machine.

If the all goes well the shop will open to full use Saturday morning.

I will update this opening projection once we have confirmed that the felder is completely operational and no other issues have been found.

Thank you Ian for working diligently on this. We appreciate it!

That is interesting they told you they own it as we paid for most of it!

But in all seriousness, we may want to look into
I spoke with them early on about some equipment like lasers they are not the cheapest product but they allow for very targeted disbursement of a fire retardant and can be set up to trigger an alarm if triggered.

@IanLee let me know if you want me to get a quote on it. but if I had to guess it’s around 1,500
