Wooden Yardsticks

It’s hanging up on the pillar.

It belonged to my late father-in-law who used it in his upholstery shop. I hope it gets a lot of use in CA.

It will be well used. What was his name?

I have had excellent success with the precision of the lasers. Why do you suspect otherwise?

I think that most people who use yardsticks can tolerate a few .001’s inch deviation. If they need something more precise they tend to use metal scales - and for greater precision calipers.

Mostly because I didn’t entirely think through what I was saying. I agree that in general a ruler being off by a few mils is not a big issue, but I get weirdly obsessive about things sometimes and if I personally were going to make a ruler I would probably measure it with calipers… I’m the weirdo that will move the dial back and forth on a power source for a good 30 seconds trying to get the meter to read 5.00 volts when 4.98 volts would be sufficient…

Yah, I can relate. Whenever I cut something on the laser I usually make test parts first to measure the kerf to ensure my final part is within 0.002" of what I intended.

His name was Leroy Baker

Making a DMS ruler could be a required training project for learning to use the laser cutter. Then we would have an endless supply!

Ditto making focus gauges in 3D printing to use in Laser. The possibilities are endless.

Department names on the rulers would be great!

Rulers would be be a neat giveaway also for things like open house

I have trouble seeing most rulers and I am thinking I might be able to make one I could see

So, this thread reminded me why I miss DMS so much.
Will pay my dues forthwith.
Mom in the hospital in OKC plus other complications means it might be a few days.
But who cares, because you get my money.

And maybe when you back in town we will have expanded

I am very curious. Have a good open house this weekend! Depending on how much I need to help my mom, I may be in next week.

Someone warn the Shapeoko. I have a project for that one that I never quite figured out.

@Terrence - What about a DMS yardstick competition? See how many devices/materials can create a replicable yardstick?

Update: I found two of the three original wooden yardsticks hidden behind a machine.

Which machine?

Behind that small milling machine right by the door in CA. Apparently, the yardsticks blended in with the scrap wood stored there. I hung them on the side of the big work table where other measuring devices are stored. It would still be neat to see DMS made yardsticks made available around the space.

Okay - so they never left CA, just sort of hidden.

Yes, I looked all over but didn’t see them. As always, they were in the last place I looked… Still, I hope we make some DMS rulers.
