Wood World ( And useless non communicative extra characters to satisfy an arbitrary requirement )

Wood World was suggested as a plywood supplier in another thread.

Do they cut down 4x8 sheets on request ? ( I note many plywood sizes are NOT 4x8, but the Baltic Birch I looked up is 4x8. ) My truck can handle 4 wide, but not 8 feet long. So being able to get it cut is a major factor.

I dont know about wood world but we found the best pricing on birch by far at dakota hardwoods. Might call and ask if they can do a rough cut?

Our truck has a short bed and we were able to transport full sheets.

Thanks. I’ll give them a call.

My SUV will NOT carry a full sheet. I’ve checked. 4x6 maybe. 4x5, certainly. 4x8, not happening.

They have a panel saw for cutting the plywood sheets. I believe they also have 5x5’ size.

Ah sorry, I thought you had a truck bed. No probably not. But see if Dakota can do a rough cut. Hopefully they can.

Plan A was Home Depot, where they will do a rough cut.

But I’ve been told by Experts that I should go elsewhere and redesign my project. Even though I’ve never disclosed what it is.

We have such fun around here…

Dakota Hardwood has a really good price. And no saw. So I can’t transport it at present.

Wood World is higher than Home Depot. A lot higher.

Trade off now may be what it’ll cost to make a jig to hold a sheet of plywood on my roof rack.

What truck do you have?

It’s a SUV… … … …

Depending on the suv, if it will lay down flat on the 4ft width and the only issue is the length, the go to move (at least for me) would be using 3 8ft 2x4s as support, a ratchet strap to hold the rear door closed, a towel or blanket for padding to not damage the wood and some red caution tape so not to get pulled over.

It’s a 2010 Expedition. I really don’t like to drive with the rear hatch open. With the second row seats folded down I have room for about 4’ wide by 6’ long.

I’m about to install an aftermarket roof rack ( 5 foot x 3.5 ft. ). 2 or 3 8ft 2x4s rigged on that as supports may be a viable plan. 2 feet of plywood sticking out the rear window may work. Have to measure the width there.

The price is cheap enough on the plywood that it’s worth some time/effort to figure out a way.

I also responded in your other thread, but I am going to Dakota on Friday with my truck. As my wife said, it is a short bed, but I could transport full size plywood, with the tailgate down.
If it works for you, we can coordinate it and I help you bring the plywood to DMS.

You can text me at 817-899-7129 or email [email protected].

Email sent. Thanks !

No idea as to the quality, but just received an email from Dallas Habitat for Humanity ReStore Memorial Day sale showing 21mm 4x8 “Birch Plywood” for $34.97 a sheet and 18mm for $29.97. Have gotten some great deals there in the past (although kind of hit or miss). Only at the i30 & Broadway and West Dallas locations according to the ad.

I have the same challenge transporting 4Ă—8 sheets. Picked up an 18 volt Ryobi circular saw on sale intending to use it to cut down sheets in store parking lot if necessary in future.

For future reference: Hardwood Lumber (very near Central Hardwoods) sells both 4’x8’ and 5’x5’ baltic birch sheets AND will cut them down to fit your SUV for a minor upcharge. I’ve been going to them for at least 20 years, and they’ve always treated me well.
