Wood strength question

I need to put a threaded insert into a hunk of hardwood board (to make a small woodcarving vise). It’s not going to take a lot of stress but I wondered if one of these orientations would be stronger; i.e., suffer less wallowing out around the insert.

The insert will ultimately be crosswise in a “dowel” not really in a block … but the custom dowel can be made in any of these three orientations.

Not t knowing the full use case, the general case is that the grain orientation for the dowel will generally be more important than the grain orientation for the threaded insert. And that the grain should run the length of the dowel.

Thanks.

On second thought, the insert was really just trying to take a shortcut. I’d probably be better off just drilling/tapping a hole crosswise in a metal rod.
