When we meet on the 27th creative arts will be discussing large tool purchases and small tool purchases.
I would like to invest (more) into our already strong interest areas while still slowly building new interests.
That being said let’s start brainstorming items/tools/consumables you would like access to in the room. Golden stars for people who provide links.
Think over (what we have):
Fibers
Leather
Vinyl (thinking of updating the whole system)
Shapeoko
Letterpress
Digital
Dye sublimation
Heat transfer vinyl
Matt cutting/framing
Drawing
Painting
Sewing
Embroidery
Polymer clay
Moldmaking
Airbrush
Costuming
This is for brainstorming purposes and I would like people just to throw stuff out so it can be discussed at the meeting. Have fun!
That is already in the works. It’s going to be in September and was waiting to finalize supply order once it got ironed out. It’s a class with a non-member teacher that needed sponsoring. Fuzzy on info there until I got clear answers tonight when I was at the space. Now clear on sponsoring details so once submitted in next couple days, I’ll give links to Nicole to order supplies
I think we oughta start with small amount (1-3) since it’s kinda brainless easy to do and crazy fast to show and minimal variation.
In other words a good candidate as a tool for the cabinet like others not needing much duplication and can be worked into another class (like what’s becoming my morphed spinning class / fiber freeforall Tuesdays) or maybe a topical class you could teach on quick techniques using several different tools (i.e. narrow-work/cordage using lucet, finger-loop weaving, knitting spool, etc, all kinda similar result, cords, different tools that are quick and easy to pick up…collectively might be a good topic. Individually, a little thin to build a dedicated class on, but great mixed into another.)
So just so you know this morning at 10a I’m meeting with a professor from a&m commerce about starting letterpress classes here. He also has silk screen people he thinks might be interested. I thought I hit a home run with the last silk screen guy but unfortunately he turned into a vapor. I really do try to get stuff done and people excited about tools.
The number of calls I make is staggering.
Cool. I’d been interested in silkscreen way back for a project and had no idea we had one. And no idea how to use but would like to learn.
I think like some of the fiber-specific equipment, well and the things we do at the space in ANY group with specialized tools, the key is having someone to teach it, but as important…helping folks realize that thing they had never heard of is actually something they can make very very cool widgets with and didn’t know they needed until a neat class with good description selling it appears on the calendar.
Can we go ahead and get some legal-sized sublimation paper? I don’t mind picking it up from either Johnson Plastics or even ordering it from JDS and getting reimbursed. I am headed to JDS later this week to pick up some supplies.
