Wine and spirits class?

Who would be interested in a wine and spirits class? I know it’s not DMS related but it is learning related. I really enjoyed taking the Sommelier test and if anyone would like to learn straight from the Official Court of Sommelier text book for Level 1 certification, I would be happy to teach a class going chapter to chapter, every region!

I was talking my dad into doing one of these, hes a master somm, I’m not sure how to get it done at the space without a bunch of people getting hammered.

spitballing, but isnt most of the it doable with substitute goods? Ie corked water, grape juices, etc.

I think having a presentation / technique / theory class would be amazing

The first level doesn’t require any wine at all. Its purely information. But Tastes can be included too! Maybe an after 7pm class and definitely a limit, lol

It’s simple, do as Somms. do and SPIT. :wine_glass::clinking_glasses:

Wouldn’t the class have to be byob and I’m just making assumptions here if it’s a paid class in the form of cost and payment recieved and the wine is provided, wouldn’t a license or atleast tabcs ok be needed?

Well I am TABC certified too and I believe offering complimentary wine is legal as long as the participants are over the age of 21. Which none of the classes I’m suggesting would be tasting wine. This is purely educational in terms of regions and varietals. No tasting

Oh well that seems kinda, more so a geography class than a wine class if you’re omitting all the complexities of wine appreciation but to eaches own

I am an ex-bartender. I love making martinis. I was interested in teaching a martini making class and wanted to charge a small fee to cover liquor costs.

If there is money changing hands then TABC will not like it.

I asked and they were not happy with the idea. Their issue is people gaming the liquor license by “offering a liquor or spirit class” for a fee, If allowed a little bit then you do not need a liquor license which is their bread and butter. You offer a “Class” every Friday and Saturday night at your dance club instead of getting a liquor license. They did not have a work around.

The other issue with liquor or spirits classes is the dram shop law. If someone leaves your class and harms someone in a car wreck, you will be sued and lose. BTW DMS would be named as well and lose. It is a huge liability issue that the BOD would have to bless.

That is part of the appreciation to wine though, knowing the geography and how it gets its flavor. There are so many variables that contribute to the final product.

Only if you bury it at the base of a grape vine.

Yea just like knowing streets and location is an important part of driving but there’s a reason there’s not a section in drivers ed that teaches you all the streets and maps, cause without physical interaction with it it’s completely useless, describing how a left bank differs from a right bank wine isn’t going to be of any use unless you invole the senses just like someone describing location using landmarks in a town you’ve never been to, ya you’ll know it’s by the old church but you’ll have no clue where that actually is or what it actually looks like
