I was out of town for the most recent lathe training that was on the 22nd and have been looking to be trained whenever someone who can host the event has the time. I’ve taken the online prerequisite and can make myself available for whenever an instructor has the time. I also have another member who would like to be trained on the lathe if that helps to populate the class.
Evan,
Usually I alternate between teaching the mill class and the lathe class in a two month cycle. What are you looking to do on the lathe and when were you hoping to do it? Who is the other member looking for the class and what is his situation?
I could schedule another lathe class in May in addition to the mill class I expect to give in four weeks. Some times committee members other than myself have given these classes also.

Bob
Bob,
I was looking to turn 1018 carbon steel casings for some solenoids to help direct and concentrate the field generated. It’s a pretty simple part and looks like it’d be ideal to do on the lathe, basically just a cup with a hole in the bottom for a piston to fit through. I’d also like to turn the pistons themselves which are also very simple and made of the same steel. I’d be hoping to get them finished by maybe like the middle of May? It’s really just whenever I’m trained and have time to travel over there and make them.
The other member is just looking to be trained to have the fundamentals of operating the lathe as well as permission to use the makerspace lathe, so no plans to machine anything just yet.
If you create an event whenever you’d be available to teach or the other members that could host I’d be sure to clear my schedule for whatever time works best for whoever is teaching.
I’ve attached the manufacturing drawing for the casings I wish to make if anyone is interested

Thanks for the reply,

Evan,
So, I am thinking of Sunday afternoon the 14th for an off cycle Lathe class;
Are you guys available then?
Regards,
Bob
Have you taken the on-line class already? You’ll need that before you can sign up for the machine -side class. I think the link is still just on the Wiki, under Machine Shop.

Bob,
That sounds perfect, I’ll be there. What exact time are you thinking? I will also be bringing the other member I was talking about in my last messages.
Thanks,
Evan
Evan,
I am thinking of 2-5pm. I’ll schedule it today, but it won’t show on the events calendar until Monday or Tuesday. Be sure that your member friend has also taken the online part I, the slide show, MIT videos and quiz, so that he too will be able to register himself for the machine side class, which is part two.
Regards,
Bob
Class now open:

New guys – don’t forget that you need to log into the Calendar so that it recognizes you as a member, and as a person who’s taken the necessary pre-req class.
