What's new in Laser...or "Tell me something good"

That “something good” is actually more than one thing:

  • David Summer inaugurated our first Office Hours last night. Confused by all the buttons? Laser Basics class went too fast? Took the class too long ago to remember? Inkscape eating your lunch? RDWorks the bane of your existence? Rotary engraver still a mystery? Just don’t want to burn it all down? Have we got the event for you: Office Hours. We’re reserving Donner, staffing it with a friendly member of Team Laser, and helping all comers as best as we can. Or you can just take a selfie with one of us. Next Office Hours are April 30th at 7pm.

  • The other something good is, if you’ve taken the “Printmaking Techniques using Laser Block Engraving” class with Astrud and Paul and now want to become Laser Basics certified, there is a special offering of LB for those makers. It’s perfect for those who will want to laser engrave their plate for the Steamroller Printmaking event on May 6. Love those crossover classes. Thanks, Printmaking SIG, for adding some spice to Laser’s calendar!

  • But wait, there’s more. We’ve begun numbering our classes, following Woodshop’s example. Our instructors John @talkers, Tommy @tomthm, and David @pinewoodnut created 100-series for entry level classes, 200-series for skills like rotary engraving, living hinges, and box making, and the 300-series for classes that take those skills higher. We still have Laser Basics classes that pre-date the numbering system on the calendar. Please bear with us.

  • Lastly, Laser Basics is now divided into Laser 101 Thunder Basics and Laser 102 Zing Basics. Zing deserves an entry level class all to itself.

Hahahaha. Little do you know, this month I’ve been phoning it in.
Half the month out of town. The other half looking into committee finances.
It’s the Team that’s been doing the work. It’s always been the Team that’s doing the work.
They keep our nice things running. I make sure they have money for the nice things. And food in their bellies on Maintenance Day.
Then I tell the world about their work.

Great update. I especially like the “Office Hours” concept. The Ft Collins Creator Hub makerspace in Colorado does something similar with their “docents.”

These volunteers staff the ‘space during core hours expressly to help others in the use of the tools. Kudos to the Laser Team for reaching out to help others get up to speed.
