Admiral Grace Hopper was one of the greatest lectures ever on electronics making it visual to learners. This is one of my favorites and to this day is how I think of a nano-sceond and why it is important that components get closer and smaller: the speed of light is a limiting factor!!

I like the comparison, that if a light beam could circle the earth, it would go around it 7 1/2 times in 1 second. In a nano second it will go one foot. A 3GHz CPU clock goes high, low, high, low, high, low in one nanosecond. Each state is only 2 inches long at light speed. We have come a long way.
