Yay! … here let me help
Y’all start a thread about the gift shop- cluttering up my executive level marketing study gosh darn it.
I’m going to integrate the two and say we should sell prints … right off the new printer …
just kidding … okay … we will get a new topic thread … sorry
@Team_Moderators … can you split off the IRS / Gift shop into a new topic?
Split out to Selling Items in DMS Gift shop - #8 by Lampy
Sorry @uglyknees
I know this might be a sore subject, but all I want is what I thought I was getting the first time I signed up. Just shortly after that the printer that I saw on tour in CA was moved to the tiny closet, and it basically quit working there.
My goal is to be able to print to canvas, seal it, and then overpaint it. TBH, I ended up finding a cheap place online and have been using that. I don’t get the color control I want, but it’s working out just fine.
If I want a fine art b&w I’ll just pay @pandabob to do it. (BTW, bought one of your wife’s prints from a gallery in Deep Ellum. Love it, and her style.)
Here’s hoping that we don’t let the hunt for a printer grow too complicated. Something that actually works is better than nothing at all because everyone’s needs haven’t been met. And if we buy a machine to facilitate a side hustle, I’m gonna just call the whole thing a loss and plan on never using it. But then, my opinion about picking up one-off equipment for only a couple of members to use is likely well remembered.
[MODERATOR EDIT: This post was erroneously moved out of this topic. After it was returned to this topic it is now most likely out of its original order.]
That sounds like a winner. I’d like to add that having some kind of user management / log / queue, something that records prints to compare against payments is a must day one of it being operational. I recall we had issues with prints not being paid for previously.
Ya, I’m going to insist that we have software to track prints. Many come with it already installed but it’s also something we can buy. We installed an aftermarket free version that was no-so-behind the scenes but still not apparent. That helped track usage.

@CaryF300 The caveat of input by user can be a bad thing. My copier had the same feature and the value you could put in was average cost per page and didn’t actually correspond to ink usage. So no matter how much coverage of ink there was, the software said every page cost the same. It took getting the rip software to get a more accurate average, based on ink usage, but that software didn’t allow for paper cost. But, we knew the cost of paper by the sheet, so that wasn’t all that difficult to deal with. I hope the system that comes with the printer allows for granularity. Media will still likely be an issue as it will require user confirmation, but lesser so if we can trust the ink costs.
I’m on the side of the canon printer as well, but I think many that want the long lasting outdoor capable prints will be disappointed with it. We can counter act some of those issues by bringing in a lamination option as a secondary process to their prints.
One more * tip ‘o’ the hat * to Canon.
I’m not the type of person who really has any loyalty to a brand, but I do like Canon products and can’t ever remember thinking “This Canon is a piece of junk”
Which is far more than I can say for HP printers… and monitors, and laptops, and desktops etc.
Can’t follow you on that. Canon has burned plenty of people in the digital camera market and HP is the leader in black and white laser printers. Each has its place, HP being much bigger than Canon just plays in the consumer crap market more often than canon.
Only the “variable cost” is input by the user. See the paragraph above the bullet points.
That isn’t quite accurate - the software on the Canon does calculate the ink used - and also has a column for cost of inks - the printers come with 300ml starter tanks but they also offer 700ml larger tanks (what I have switched to).
The trick will be to prevent someone from changing the dollar values in the cost accounting software by someone that feels “entitled” to a lower cost than the folks that volunteer their time.
Thanks for the update.
There are a few things I personally would like to do with a printer. In order:
- I play a lot of table top RPGs, and would like to print both color maps and line art b&w maps. So, gicleé and plotter capabilities are both desirable.
- The more media the printer can handle, the better. I have some projects in mind that will require printing on fabric, plastic sheets, and paper. Being able to print on paper is, of course, the #1 priority. I’d like to see the printer capable of handling roll fed and sheet fed media.
- It would be cool if the printer could handle adhesive backed stock of some sort.
Can’t wait to see what the committee decides on!
Thank you for your positivity - if you’re interested in starting the discussion our meeting is on the 11th.
