What do I need to do to use the car jack in the automotive area?

I looked on the DMS Calendar and Learn but I don’t see anything regarding classes for the car jack.

Also, for pulling in with your car, where do you go to pull your car into the garage so it can be worked on? As well, is there a limit for how long you can be working on your car as long as you’re there?

The auto lift or just jacks? The auto lift requires a class. The jacks do not. However if you are uncertain, don’t be afraid to ask someone. The Makerspace is a great place where people are willing to help.

If you’d like lift training I’ll be there tomorrow at 7 for the motorsports meeting and can check you out.

We post lift trainings on the calendar as available (depends on the availability of trainers). Motorsports folks meet at 7pm on Thursdays and are usually able to help folks get signed off on the lift. Additionally if you post here you might be able to coordinate a time with a lift trainer individually.

…where do you go to pull your car into the garage so it can be worked on?

There’s a ramp located behind the building, near the blue dumpster. The ramp leads to a garage door which can be operated using controls located at the bottom of the ramp, or using the controls mounted on the inside wall.

As well, is there a limit for how long you can be working on your car as long as you’re there?

The auto bays and lift are first come first served. You are allowed to occupy the space for as long as you are present, working on the car. The big thing is to not leave the vehicle unattended in the bays, this ensures the space is available for the next person to use.

Edit: Corrected typo

Does the makerspace have just regular car jacks? I know generally how one works, I just need it for a small Ford Escape.

Yes they are standard floor jacks and jack stands.

And, since they aren’t nearly as likely to drop your car several feet, training is not required for the floor jacks.

Just curious, what do you want or need to do to your Ford Escape? Do you know how to use a floorjack? Do you know where the safe lifting points on your Ford Escape are?

I’ve just posted an automotive orientation event on the
Calendar for this Sunday if you’d like to be shown around the area!

I’ve been wondering if I should remove the word “automatic” from this title. Would you consider our floor jacks “automatic” in any way?

No, I wouldn’t. That being said I believe this persons initial question was directed at the lift, not the floor jacks.

The initial conversation is a bit confused… this is now about the floor jacks, though.

True, I suppose it could go either way.
