This is a very dangerous situation that residents need to take seriously
Hurricane Florence is expected to be the first Category 4 hurricane in recorded history to make landfall along the shores of North Carolina. It is also the first major hurricane to directly impact the region since Hurricane Fran in 1996. This is a particularly dangerous situated to which residents need to pay attention and for which they need to prepare.

Florence is expected to produce large swells along the coastlines of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia and a Storm Surge Warning may be issued as early as Tuesday morning. These swells could create life-threatening surf conditions and rip currents.

Another significant impact that Florence is expected to have is freshwater flooding produced by prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall that is expected to occur as Florence makes landfall and begins to slow down over land. This rainfall event may extend northward into the mid-Atlantic region as the cyclone makes it farther inland on Friday.

And, of course, wind impacts are expected to be significant. Damaging winds from Florence may spread well inland into portions of the Carolinas and Virginia on Thursday and Friday. A Hurricane Watch may be issued for the coast as early as Tuesday morning.
