Check out the cleared out and cleaned up Hatcher’s Workshop. Russell (@Gimli) and I moved all the Ham Radio gear to off site storage and picked up one of the shelves from the Creative Arts area. Thanks @ESmith for being so kind in sharing the shelf unit and @uglyknees for out growing them because we couldn’t afford them if we had to buy them. We also pulled @frank_lima 's table from the room. It was too wide and short for us. But, it is a great table and is sitting by the dock for a Committee to grab. I would suggest Digital media or RC grab it quick and replace those folding tables you are using with a quality table we didn’t want to give up.
So what is next for the committee???
Build a stool height bench? Tim (@TBJK) and I are thinking about a metal framed bench with a sturdy top. Russell suggests that we shrink the table top to less than 30 inches to gain room to move and lessen the nature of the table becoming storage space when it should be open work space.
Walter (@wandrson) is donating a vibratory tumbler and media separator to help out because the rotary tumbler we have is on it’s last legs. Thanks so much for this Walter, we wouldn’t have the funds to replace this tool for some time.
Tim, Walter and I all went in together to buy a RCBS charge master Powder Dispencer. This is a $300 tool that makes loading 0.1 grain powder charges a simple and enjoyable process. We will be doing classes on the powder dispenser when it arrives.
Fund raising, if your teaching a class and want to just help a committee in need, please pick Hatcher’s because we are in need and your money now is going to have a multiplying effect on the committee rather than just additive.
Thanks everyone and enjoying all the growth and involvement I’m seeing around the space.
Side note,
Anyone sitting on some Aluminum extrusion they want to kick in for the bench, Russel and I should also take a trip to Fred’s and see if he has any he would share.
Do we have a measurement for the desired height? I have some extrusion I can check and see if it is long enough. Should also be able to dig up some hardware and possibly some steel rails to support the top. Though if light weight is your goal, these extrusions may not qualify.
I was going to use c channel for the base of the top then pipe/ tube for the legs. The legs on the stationary table will have some adjustments to make level. The mobile one make retractable wheels with adjustable feet to make level. I was planning on using c channel to the base top of that as well. Pipe/ tube is more stable than say angle iron in the same vertical operation. We most certainly can use extrusions for the legs & bolt the to the base top.
I think my sock monster has evolved and is now eating tape measures as well. Now that I found one, they 55 inch lengths, roughly 2.75 square. (70x70?) All black powder coated.
I also have steel C channel flanged to use as cross structure, several inches deep by roughly 31.5 inside to inside. I would need to inventory that I have enough of those for my own project before donating.
I was thinking extrusion for something like a T channel to mount in the table top. Then we would mount the presses to a butcher block and lock them to the table with t channel. But, if you have table size extrusion that is exciting as well. I’m not completely sure where we are going with this at this point because we have No money so we are most likely going in the direction of FREE. So we will be selective based on what we can get our hands on.
If anyone has 2" by 4" they want rid of I’m planning to make my press mounts out of those.
Awesome @kbraby, I’m sure we could find use for those!!! I’ll be at the space tonight if you want to chat about it.
The ones with feet are (of course) on the bottom of the pIle. I need to rent a storage unit for garage thinning, and these are on the list to store. So if I push it up to this weekend, I might be able to bring them up for evaluation on the weekend. If they don’t work for hatcher’s, I want them back in my stock pile.

Here is a to scale drawing of the room. The current rationale is something in the 50 - 54 inch by 24 - 30 inch size for the left bench and a 40 - 45 inch wide same depth bench on the right side. We want the left bench to be able to be wheeled out, with caster that can be lifted off the ground. Here is an example of caster like this that are sold for the shop smith: http://www.shopsmith-media.com/os_c_images/01_MarkVCasters.jpg
I looked further into the commercially make retractable casters from rockler & shop master. Both tend to have bad reviews of the wheel casing coming off. Perhaps we can build our own setup? How attached are you to doing butcher block top @Nick ? We could perhaps use 2 pieces of 3/4 ply sandwiched & a 3/8" for sacrificial top with the T-track in-layed. I looked into butcher block & it’s not too cheap although we could make out own if need be.
I’m not hard set on the butcher board top. We don’t have a great way of making butcher board tops the size of the bench at DMS. But, I have a friend that works at a cabinet shop that might help us make one.
Or we could buy one at IKEA and cut it to size. They are about $90 and I think one would last us a pretty long time. But, money will probably be the big decider.
We do want the area to look inviting as that will make more people want to come around. I’m going to make smaller butcher boards for the pressed and accessories to mount to the table so if I can find a solution, I’ll make it. If not I’ll help you with the ply option. Sound like a deal?
