Washing garments with heat transfer vinyl?

How well does the heat transfer vinyl stand up to machine washing/drying? Any specific care instructions?

I was told to just wash as normal and so far, after maybe 10-12 washes, everything is holding up just fine.

Do you use a dryer?

Sure do. I wash and dry on Medium heat if that helps.

In general, Heat transfer deal ok with machine washing. They tend to all apply at well over 220 F and Dryers even on high try to stay under 150 F. Some specialty vinyls like “Real Foil” and glitter have some issues. The glitter can be beaten off by friction and the foil is just a bad product for apparel.

I’ve got a shirt with HTV on it and it’s just fine in the washer and dryer. The very first time I laundered it I got a corner or two that started to pull up but I hit it with an iron to set it again (apparently I hadn’t kept it in the press quite long enough) but since then it’s been fine.

The only care instructions I’ve been given have been to turn them inside out. I’ve never actually done that, though, so I don’t know if it changes anything. I will say that if you put HTV on a stretchier shirt you’ll get some areas sometimes where the vinyl cracks or pulls away from the shirt. They make “stretch” HTV for that reason. With mine, I just bring them in periodically and press them for 10 seconds or so with the tshirt press.

That has more to do with friction and abrasion. Not a bad idea for any printed shirt.
