Walnut Needed for Lathe Turning

Where is the best place to buy walnut or other dark wood, properly dried and ready to turn on the lathe? I need 1.25 X 4 X 6 or close to that, ten pieces.

Have you checked Wood World? I’ve had good luck with them in the past.

Also we have a list of wood suppliers on the Wiki: Wood Suppliers - Dallas Makerspace

What are you making?

A lady has five rainsticks. She wants two brackets for each to attach them to a wall. Below is what I showed her. The real ones will have one round part instead of two, and the round part will be as wide as the base.

Oh that’s cool, I wouldn’t have thought to do that on a lathe, but that sure would work. I will also agree to look locally for a 6/4 sawn 4" wide plank then cut at 6 inch length’s. Else you might have to get two 3/4 boards and do a glue up. Worst case you could get an 8/4 board and re-saw down to the thickness you need, but that’s a lot of work.

Thanks, Steve!

I wouldn’t have thought to do that on a lathe,

Isn’t there an expression, “When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” Well, all I have is the lathe…

No, its a great way to get the rounded parts on there. though I think I would rough cut the wood to a T shape first on the bandsaw to save you some time on the lathe.

…and get material for pens. I had thought of that.
