Volunteer Interest - Converting Crates to Dog Houses for a Good Cause

Hi, all: Woodshop was contacted recently by C.A.R.E. Team coordinator for City of Dallas (https://dallasanimalservices.org/animal-services/southern-dallas-care-program/). My contact, Lily, has found a source for crates that would otherwise go into the dump, and wants to explore turning them into dog houses for underserved populations. They provide material, storage, transportation, etc. Looking to partner up with folks who could do the work.

I think it is a worthwhile project to explore, so I explained I would post and see what sort of interest there might be before we get to logistics. From the pics she sent, it would likely be putting 4x4’s on the bottom, cutting a door into the front, adding a slanted roof, and, likely, painting. Will likely start with a prototype and see what is involved. Done some research myself and could be a pretty cool (no summer pun intended) project.

Let me know if you’d be willing to help! (Yes these are my two rescues  )

Bark! Bark! Bark Bark!! ==> Google Translate ==> Count me in!! :dog: :dog:

I am willing to help, I have had the basic woodshop class, but I don’t feel confortable with the saws at this time, but I can do other thing

Just make sure the pallets haven’t been treated with chemicals: many imported pallets are treated with insecticides to prefent importation of exotic insects.

Here’s an article on evaluating pallets based on the color they are painted and the symbols printed on their sides:
