Vacuum pump/chamber for stabilizing wood

Does DMS have a vacuum pump/chamber that could be used for stabilizing wood? The pump is the main thing that I am wondering about. I can make a chamber for pretty cheap.

Has anyone stabilized wood before? I haven’t, but it doesn’t seem too hard and would love some tips/tricks for DIY chamber/pump as well. Can a hand pump work? can I use something like a mason jar that I have around my house?

I believe there is a vacuum pump in automotive used for A/C systems. One is a gizmo Allen used that just uses an airline.

Oh the gizmo thingee I believe is red plastic in appearance/

Thanks! I will check it out next time I’m at the space. Stabilizing wood seems pretty interesting to me and I want to learn how to do it but don’t have a lot of extra money to invest right now.

If you really want need a vacuum pump let me know. I have one you can borrow.

Thanks! I am just looking at options right now and figuring out what I need to buy and what DMS has. I will let you know though.

Please post if you think you find a workable solution that can be adopted by wood workers at 'Space in general. Cheers…

I’m wondering about the pressure pots and or vacuum chambers alluded to in this thread re: CA:

I don’t know how kindly they’d take to using it for this purpose, if we still have it/them, but it seems like other folks use similar equipment happily…

I would be happy to see it used. Keep us posted on your success!

Awesome! I am planning on digging into wood stabilizing in about a month or so. I just need to actually learn how to do it. Thanks for the info!

As @uglyknees has said, there should not be any problem using the vacuum pot in CA - as long as it doesn’t damage the pot. E.g. you have a smaller pot inside holding the wood and the goop it is sitting in, don’t pour the goop directly into the pot so it is not contaminated. Best take this stuff out into the shop to do it so any oders or vapors aren’t concentrated in the CA room. This is no different than when people make molds.

Hope it works for you.

Thanks! I was planning on putting it in a small metal pot inside of the vacuum pot. I plan on using Cactus Juice, which I think has low fumes, if any, but will still take it out of CA.

If you think there will be any sort of volatiles coming off, you should seriously consider a cold trap of some sort inline prior to the pump. nothing ruins a pump faster than gummy volatiles that vaporize under low pressure and then congeal in the pump when pressure is equalized.
