I’ve got an old 10.7 GH/S ASICminer blade that I’m shutting down. Anyone have a use for it? It’s way too slow to be worth running as a bitcoin miner anymore but maybe there’s something else it would be good for? If anyone has an interesting project idea for it, I’d probably be inclined to donate it. Maybe someone wants to set up a DMS node on one of the secure social networks like twister that rely on the bitcoin crypto protocol?
It needs 12VDC @ about 90 watts (most of which seems to be converted directly into heat so you’ll need lots of fans). Looks like this:

If someone wanted to get us enough solar panels to run the miner, we could run it off solar without having to worry much about efficiency.
I still mine with a 2 G/Hs USB stick, connected to a full node so I can solo-mine. It’s like an automatic lottery ticket. On the off chance it happens to find a block, I get 25 bitcoins. On the flipside, if it doesn’t ever find a block I get nothing (well, I get a small amount of heat).
Cool, I’d go for that. If someone can come up with a solar/wind powered system that will provide steady 12VDC @ 100 watts, I’ll contribute the mining hardware. Other things that would be needed: an energy storage system to keep things going when there’s no sun/wind; a mining proxy like cgminer (could run on a Raspberrry Pi), and some fans. The miner seriously needs a lot of cooling. Even with fans it’s too hot to touch. Without fans, it would probably self-destruct pretty quickly.
We don’t necessarily need a storage system, we could just let it power down at night or when cloudy.
True enough, we could start out running it during daylight. I was thinking energy storage could be as simple as a surplus car battery. If anyone gets interested and comes up with the power, ping me. The miner is still running here, eking out a few more cents per day for me but I can pull it and bring up to the space any time.
It’s been a while but I thought I’d bump this topic and see if we had any other members interested in bitcoin mining these days. My offer for the 10 GH/s hardware still stands and I may be retiring some 180 GH/s AntMiners later this year. I love the solar panel idea Andrew suggested and panels are quite inexpensive these days (less than $1/watt). I think we can come up with all the other hardware we need to set things up pretty easily. The only question is can we put panels on the roof of our current building? If we’re good there, I think we should do this. I even have some spare time coming up to work on it if anyone’s interested.
