uRAD Radiation Monitor Network

Radu, the project sponsor for uRAD the global radiation monitoring network reached out to me today to see if we were interested in supporting his project uRAD.

It seems a tad expensive $179 + $20 shipping. Is this something that DMS members are interested in? It would be cool to have a data point at DMS to measure our radiation exposure but not looking to spend DMS money on it.

I think it is a great idea! I would be willing to kick in some cash to cover the cost.

The cost isn’t unreasonable if the design does actually use a ‘regulated’ high voltage supply as claimed. Most of the cheap Geiger counters don’t and it severely impacts their accuracy–spurious counts.

Perhaps Chris Carson could use this to complete our Geiger counter build? He has most of our tubes.

In Radiation Safety Officer Training, we were pointed to an EPA website that already tracks radiation levels in major urban areas:

and trends over time for Dallas:

Now there is a novel thought!

I recently met some parents whose 13 year old daughter made her own Geiger Counter and I believe it was the same as the kit sold at MicroCenter here:

Looks like it uses the same Soviet surplus tubes as well.
