Tom Petty Dallas Music Makerspace

As some of you may know for the past 8 months or so I have been toying with the idea of starting a small shared public music studio and workshop area in DFW. Needless to say starting a non-profit along with gathering financial and infrastructural resources has been more than I expected. Any and all ideas or help is welcomed.

Have you considered creating a crowd funding site?

I have, but feel the fact that most of those sites taking a percentage of the money raised isn’t in the spirit of what I’m trying to accomplish.

The roughly 8% that go fund me charges is pretty reasonable when you consider the legal and financial costs associated with setting up a private trust fund people could donate to. Not to mention the paperwork needed for directly handling large number of donations.

My only other suggestion would be to find one or two large donors willing to bankroll the space. For that I would start with a formal business plan and getting the non-profit incorporated.

I would strongly suggest building out a show portfolio and build a following of them. Use iTunes podcast, podcast network, and soundcloud as a launching platform along with a strong social media brand and presences.

This gives one their support network, audience, and contacts to go from there with the launch of a studio and workshops. At this point then one should be able to preform a kickstarter with the fan base and in the off season position themselves for Round one of Series A funding from angle investors.

when you make it big don’t forget that it was Vintage Computer Committee that got you on the right path
