Im not sure what is going on here but Im really disappointed in the state of how things are being treated and kept in the workshop area…
the broken sander.
the drill press had pieces of wood just left on it and the bed misaligned.
tools just left allover the place.
nothing is marked as broken or needs fixing. the sander was clearly broken and it was still plugged into the wall - very dangerous.
dust and chips and junk allover the tools…
i clean and make sure that all the tools I use are back into default mode every time I use them, and Im not sure what people are thinking here but I call for some kind of team wide meeting or announcement. if i see someone leaving their place like this im not going to keep quiet.
Good points, we need a better approach to promoting of culture of people picking up after themselves. I had an idea to put up publicly viewable cameras so we can crowd source public shaming of those who leave a mess, but never followed through on it. If we can’t identify those who aren’t being excellent, then I doubt any increase in signage would be that effective. And without someone sitting around watching people all the time, a camera based system seems like the only way.
I’m all in on cameras. Alex isn’t Shop Maid. He should be able to go out of town without the entire shop falling apart – and if it does, it’s OUR fault.
We could also implement a warning system, where people can get cited? or warned… Maybe even have a pay penalty.
3 strikes law… banned from a certain area for a certain amount of time.
I mean Im not perfect either but i do make sure that my supplies and work area is cleaned off … I may not be the best woodworker but the tools were broken, no where were they marked out of service, and still plugged in.
You can add to that list the fact that someone left the table saw with the blade tipped three degrees off of true. For the sake of others, if you’re going to make a subtle change like that it would be excellent if you reset it to perpendicular when you’re finished with the saw.
Would these cameras be accessible from member’s homes? So we could take a peek at the shop before we load all our crap…uh…I mean, Valuable Project Components! into our car and drive across Dallas, only to find that someone has been there all day!?!
I realize it would still be first come, first served, and no guarantees, but at least we wouldn’t have totally wasted the time and gas.
I won’t name any names (because I have no idea who it was) but when I was at the space Wednesday night, there was a safety situation in the woodshop that freaked out several regulars.
Apparently, a member brought some non-members in for a project and those non-members were using the table saw improperly… so improperly that a member ran over and turned off the saw before something terrible happened.
I was in the automotive area so I don’t know exactly what was going on but a couple of members were talking about the folks in the woodshop using several pieces of equipment in a dangerous manner. If those people had no idea how to use the equipment, it would not surprise me in the least if they were also responsible for the disarray.
No member, none member, or equipment was hurt. A member brought in two guests from a shop class, they miss used the table saw and were shut down for the day. Then the board took their action informing the member of the rules violation that none members are not allowed to use power tools at the space outside of dms classes. The board took whatever correctional actions they deemed fit and the issue was handled.
I was there and the room was a bit of a mess at the time and the quick shut down of this group may have added to the mess, but the shop was already messy.
