Thick Foam Rubber On Tall Rack

There are several large pieces of thick black foam rubber on the tall rack near the clay shop (see attached photo). Anyone know if I would be able to have about a 3’ square of it? I think it could work well to dampen vibration under my refrigerator in my van. If no, anyone know where I might find a similar product in the area? Thx

This should help if your looking to add image.

@tbjk I think this was the material purchased for the tool drawer for the Tormach and other similar applications in the machine shop .

Foambymail.com is 1 place. Not the only place to get it though.

DavePete,
The answer is NO. You nor ANY other member can take any material from the makerspace. It is theft and will be treated as such. The only materials available are on the freebie shelf. If it isn’t on the freebie shelf it belongs to the space.
Thanks,
Thomas

A little over the top? He was just asking as honest people tend to ask first.

What about in electronics? There are lots of little components such as old resistors and spare transistors that people sometimes use in a pinch or to learn with.

What about a cutoffs from laser cutting/wood shop?

What about sandpaper that is for sale in the wood shop?

What if a committee has extra material laying around after a project, can they sell it to a member?

Ofcourse, we can’t have people just up and taking valuable materials, but there is nuance in a volunteer run community that is focused on making.

Thank you Chris

Tractor Supply Company sells 3/4” thick rubber stall mats for horse stables. 4’x6’ For about $50. These are also popular for use in home exercise rooms.

They have several locations around the Metroplex - usually father out vs downtown.

Another option might be the $10 puzzle piece anti-fatigue mats sold at Harbor Freight. They come in a set of 4 pieces plus edge pieces. When combined they cover 4’x4’. 1/2” thick EVA foam (stiff enough to walk/stand on but way softer than the Tractor Supply mats).

Chris,
I couldn’t disagree with you more on the topic of my response being over the top.

Additionally, should we give credit someone doing what a person should do? Being honest…isn’t it just part of being a member of a community.

We’ve literally had a pallet of 1/4” 3”x 3” plexiglass disappear because people helped themselves. So I want people to be very clear on the fact that unless you personally carry it into the makerspace it isn’t yours and you shouldn’t plan on consuming it or consume it without the owner explicitly giving it to you. We have banned members and pressed charges for such infractions.

You can cherry pick specific one-off cases, but that seems foolish when there are real consequences for even mistakenly taking things.

I agree with Thomas. People take expensive pieces of steel out of our pile all the time. They also leave expensive pieces of steel. I often have to try to discern what is/isnt DMS steel. I often throw away frames from the plasma cutter.

I am perfectly fine with people purchasing material if they ask. However steel is very difficult to move and hard to source. A piece of galvanized conduit is not equal to a piece of 1/2 steel plate…etc

A lot of people that steal our metal take heavy plate to practice for welding tests. Heavy plate is really expensive. If members want to swap extra materials, they should do that on their own.
