There is not enough welding and laser classes

There is not enough welding and laser classes. I checked on the board every few days. Each time there isn’t any of those classes and when I manage to catch it it’s all ready filled up whether it’s free or paid it’s filled up.

We can do a 1-on-1 welding 101, which I prefer to holding classes. Otherwise, the next welding class would probably be end of Oct (maybe 21st).

I believe the laser classes are online.

Many of these classes are on demand as well.
I’m usually too busy with maintaining the lasers and other stuff to schedule full laser classes, but I am at the space almost every day and more than happy to give ad-hoc classes.

Also yeah, at least for the laser basics class, there is an online class that technically signs off. We usually recommend that a member then reaches out of discord or talk asking for office hours/in person help if needed. The exception to that is for the Fusion which is an on demand class only, and requires you to already be proficient in the thunder lasers.

how does one go about setting up an ad-hoc class, I need to learn the epilog to make some round drinkware etching projects

Usually by just making a post here on talk.

This week is looking a little busy for me, but I will likely be around on Thursday (28th) evening and Sunday (1st) afternoon/evening and can teach you. If you haven’t yet, please make sure to take the online class for the regular Thunder lasers first at learn.dallasmakerspace.org (or if you’ve taken an in person class in the past, which you can check by WhoAmI.dallasmakerspace.org and make sure Laser is on there)

If you’re going to be having an ad hoc epilog class on Thursday night or Sunday, I would like to attend as well. I am already going to be there for the dye sub class starting at 7pm on Thurs and leather sewing from 3-5pm on Sunday.

I’ve taken the online laser classes already and have used a laser with rotary at the Frisco library a few times in the past to engrave drinkware and would love to get signed off to do that at DMS.

Thanks much!!

@bigyoda42 and @SteveF … Before you do your ad hoc class, you should go to the Tools listing, select the (second to last) line entitled Rotary Attachment for Fusion and read the 11 page manual. It’s a particularly good treatment of Fusion’s Rotary attachment and includes a few pages on artwork setup.

Obviously you can ignore the page about setting it up for the very first time.

Good suggestion… will do.

Once everyone gets the training they need [and feel comfortable using the machines] consider working with the committee chairs and providing additional classes to help members that are in similar situations. More volunteers teaching lighten everyone’s load.

Basic Thunder Laser course is done. I did it twice as it’s been a minute since the first one. I can be up there Thursday, maybe 6pm if @SteveF has a class at 7.

That works for me or if needed, I can get there earlier. I’d definitely rather hang around DMS than spend extra time at the office so I can be flexible. I’m probably going to be there anyway… not like I can’t find something to do in the meantime. I want to do some resin tinkering in 3D fab.

@jsnowfreedman Does 6pm tomorrow work for you? Just trying to figure out when I should arrive.

Yes, I will aim to be there a little before 6:00 p.m. Thursday 28th.

This week has gotten a little out of hand, so if for whatever reason I am not able to make it I will post a reply on this thread by 3pm.

If you have a relatively simple vector that you would like to etch, bring it. Similarly, if you have something you’d like to see on the rotary, you are welcome to bring it. (Not guaranteeing we’ll use them and I’ll be bringing some stuff for demo)

Thanks much. I will also be there a little before 6pm if I’m not there earlier tinkering on something different. Looking forward to meeting y’all tomorrow; but if something comes up, I understand,… don’t feel pressured on my account. Like I said, I have to be there for a different class at 7pm anyway; and it doesn’t make sense for me to drive all the way home after work just to drive back out since I’m only 10 min away.

@bigyoda42, feel free to be the one to bring something to try out if we have time, as I don’t have anything handy. The items I want to work on are still in transit to my house and won’t arrive by the time I leave for work in the AM.

I got u Steve. I have a couple of tumblers

I will be in the common room in the corner by the main door.

Derp. I just walked back here to the lasers.

Hah, no worries - I’ll be over there at 6 anyways, just was catching up on some emails.

Hey! I’m looking for the next welding class and I was wondering if this info is still relevant. I’m looking to learn along with my dad.
