The importance of safety should not ever be overlooked. Especially since we are just going to get back into things. One small little thing can turn into a bad life changing thing.
One example, Safety Glasses. You may think something like that is so insignificant, however the effects of not wearing them can be life changing. That “ Ahh it will be alright just this once”, its not good, particularly in an environment were we use tools. A tool can break or you can get something in your eye, now your blind in one eye. You loose your depth perception & have to re-learn a lot of things. You could be fully blinded as well. Imagine never being able to see your significant other again, your kids, grandkids, parents or even a sunset. What are the other effects as well? Are you going to be able to do your current job? We take these things for granted, & we shouldn’t. We should take care of ourselves so we can take care of our loved ones. So we can help those that rely on us.
I don’t want those things to be downplayed, because the consequences can be serious.
So ask yourself what are your eyes worth to you? Are they worth save the 2-5$ for safety glasses?
Just because you haven’t had an incident doesn’t mean the risk is any lower.
Please think about it before you do it, think about the potential consequences.
Do you have any suggestions for remembering to wear eye protection? I have been guilty of completely forgetting I’m not wearing eye protection in places like glassworks
Walk into Machine Shop and you WILL be reminded, pretty much same in in Metal Shop.
Big difference for Machine Shop is at new location we had decided over 6 months ago that Safety Glasses are required 100% of the time inside committee boundaries. Before just when using a machine or next to one in operation.
Everyone is different. It took me a couple years to get to the point I am at with them now. This was 2000-2002 era. I have been wearing them since for almost everything, Including mowing the lawn or riding my bike. I even make my kids wear them.
Metal Shop is what got me to be aware. @hon1nbo was particularly effective. The timeI forgot, he just tapped the safety glasses he was wearing, and I got it. Short, to the point, and neutral tone. I think it’s a very effective technique for anyone to use.
