The Future of Work: Join the Maker Movement

What if we could get more people out of meaningless jobs and into work that they enjoyed? What if many jobs became easier or were altogether eliminated so we had more free time or do other kinds of work? What if we could do something more innovative and creative? This has always been the promise of automation—that it would free us to do something else more valuable. Do we still believe in that promise?

I think, that in the future there will be an increased demand for artisan made products. Look at what is happening in the artisanal food movement. When the basic needs are met by affordable mass production. a demand will develop for something better. We have the whole ‘designer movement’ in clothing and accessories. I think and hope that it will be replaced by a movement toward artisan made items.

Now can I survive till then!

If you believe CGP Grey,

this is inevitable.

I found the revelation @ 12:12 especially interesting.

This is a near inevitability that has been coming down the pike for decades and we are wholly unprepared for it. I think Europe will handle it more gracefully than the US where we’re such big fans of rugged individualism and (illusions of )daddy state economics.

The robots are coming and they may not make your life easier.

One of the interesting sub-texts of this book series was that when you eliminate computers you end up with a regression in political systems. When they removed the machines in their holy war they end up with a feudalistic society.

Another view is the Darwinian one. If we as a species are no longer relevant (inventing new things) after the creation of intelligent machines we do not warrant continued existence.

I’ll be advising my Nieces to pursue a career in robotic and/or automation.

The are a few careers that are always guaranteed to exist; politician and lawyers.

I agree. I can see a future where you develop a style. And then you replace you mass produced stuff with items customized to you as you can afford it.

In a world where robots do the work, those that own the robots will benefit, but those replaced by the robots with have to find other jobs (probably lower paying) or starve to death.

My goal is to fix the robots.
