The Cold Saw needs some work

@jpattison and Desi (not sure his handle) and I are going to go over the cold saw soon and see what we can do to address some known issues:

  • It isn’t cutting square (not a miter issue) and there is no adjustment to tram the head.
  • The cut isn’t very smooth like it should be with excessive striations. Could be a dull blade. We can change that as well. I think the blade choice may be less than optimal for steel as it is very different from the ones I have used for steel. I heard it used to cut smooth, but I am not sure if it was with this style blade. I have always used ones with more and smaller teeth.
  • The hand wheel binds some making it difficult to manually open/close the vise. Not sure if it just needs a cleaning/lubrication although there may be a missing wiper or seal here making things worse based on what other machine shop members have mentioned.

So if anyone wants to assist with doing some maintenance/repairs on the cold saw, then post here. I will post the day/time here when we get closer, it still TBD, but maybe later this upcoming week?

Also, if anyone knows of any other issues with the cold saw, then please let us know so we can resolve as many issues as possible. Thanks!

They worked on the saw last night after the meeting. They cleaned it up and changed the blade as well as checked the squareness of the cut. I think they may have got it dialed in much better.

If it’s decided that the machine still needs work, I would be interested in helping out.

Thanks for the additional info. Hopefully, Jon or Desi will chime in here with more details.

Thanks for offering. I will let you know when I know more.

It’s Dez , the saw is 98%. The gear oil was serviced, blade was changed and the clamping quide rods were cleaned. It’s now cutting extremely well and VERY square! Hardly worth the effort to pull 25% of the height of the shim that’s currently installed in it.
